People of all ages, including the very young, enjoy
Gregg's Robot Puppet Show.
In this show, regular household items become
electrically manipulated puppets that can travel,
pinch, throw, lift, and in doing so, exhibit
some surprisingly recognizable emotions such as
curiosity, annoyance, joy, and determination.
Audience enthusiasm builds as the robot puppets
accomplish various goals.
Gregg says: "I was introduced to the idea of making
moving toys out of junk while in a Grade 6 class.
I wanted to find out if what the kids were being
asked to do was actually possible.
The toys I developed were meant to help the students
design their own inventions by illustrating a
variety of approaches to cheap, simple, and
entertaining robotics.
It turned out that a group of preschoolers for
whom I demonstrated the puppets became completely
engrossed in the performance, and apparently
remembered and talked about the event for weeks.
Since then, the show has grown to include a
charming set of electric puppets in which children
will recognize familiar objects being used in
unusual ways."
